The ideal position of speakers in a room depends more on dimensions and positioning of the speakers/listener than the function of the room (studio vs. home audio). No matter if I use conventional high-end speakers or studio monitors, the best sound is roughly in the same spot (speaker and listener positioning). And that is neither near-field nor with the speakers on a console.
I have some Yamaha HS8s and they are excellent value for the money but they are not as good as my Magnepan 1.7s with my 700 wpc power amplifier, but they are much smaller, much cheaper, sound very detailed with good imaging and play very loud. The best spot for the Yamahas was not on the desktop but rather in the same spot where the Maggies normally reside.
