May I am assume that you are referring to relatively cheap "affordable" studio monitors?Having auditioned number of "cheap" pro monitors engineered to have a (claimed) "flat" frequency response, I have to agree with those who opine that flat is not necessarily the full season ticket. I assume that what I was hearing was flat, that is. Those cheap pro speakers sounded a bit bright and "unflat" to me, truth be told.
That said, I think I prefer *reasonably flat* to *studio flat*. Speakers like this sound better, I think, because a bit of jaggedness in the output makes things sound more vivid and, well... playful. Of course, it's possible to overdo it, but under-doing it might be even worse than over-doing it. This is the type of "voicing" that is most appropriate for home audio, IMO.
