Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

am I missing something, or do others think HDMI was a step backwards?

I know just enough electronics to get myself into trouble, but I have a lot of common sense. Here is my thinking..
1) hdmi cables carry both audio and video signals…OK, if we send audio and video signals to the TV, what to do with the audio signals?
2) Some receivers are “pass through” (HDMI in…HDMI only out). There are 3 places to convert signals from digital to analog (which speakers need)… the digital source, the receiver or the TV. Unless the receiver does the converting, how to get 5.1 or 7.1 audio signals to each speaker?
3) I believe the fewer “electronic devices and connectors”, the better. Why buy a receiver with HDMI connections at all? I connect component cables directly to the TV..and coax cables to the receiver.
4) I like choices. We already had 2 digital audio choices (optical and coaxial) and already had analog component cables for video signals (also 1080p) that were fine. I have noticed a trend towards HDMI use only with Blu Ray players…that forces us to buy new receivers too…I don’t like that. Some older receivers are completely adequate.
Am I missing something or was this invention intended to sell more and to make it easy for dummies but keep us from quality viewing?
