As BigguyinATL said, you are experiencing the results studied by Fletcher and Munson, and which now carries their name, the Fletcher–Munson curves. As the volume is decreased, it takes more power in the bass (and to a lesser extent, the treble) to keep the balance sounding the same. No loudspeaker can compensate for this, but requires the proper equalization. This has been known for at least 3/4 of a century, and older equipment had provisions for loudness compensation, but todays audiophiles obsession with 'less is more', they have pretty much disappeared from high end equipment. As Norman Bates suggested, get a 10 band equalizer and tweek the contour. The Fletcher–Munson equal loudness contours can be found here:
