Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Do you think modern speakers have gotten better, or worse ?

I think that inexpensive speakers are far better. And top of the line speakers at ridiculous prices are probably better (but then there was not much comparison here as prices have gone through the roof).

But as soon as I write that I can point to a dozen older school speaker designs that are still with us that compete well. But if you think about it - the old school speaker designs that are still with us are probably still with us for a reason - and for every one that has survived there are probably 1000 that didn't.

And like I have said before - what do we mean by better. I look at all the speakers that I really like based on review samples, shows, in home auditions and they sound different - they use different drivers - different cabinet philosophies.

I loved MBL at CAS - you know that two way undamped corner box I like, I immensely enjoyed Nordic Tone/Electrocpmaniet and Broadman speakers (Bosendorfer of old) Gallo 3.5s, Acoustic Zen Crescendos, Teresonics, Soundlab and I head a great old set of Klipsch speakers in Hong Kong.

Better? Sure I might choose one over the other for my personal use but you can get value and great sound out of any of those and many others.

Then again I may just be a speaker slut.
