Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

I mostly agree

The trend among many designers to tip up the upper midrange and treble in some of their products renders many new speakers unpleasant to my ears, even those that have been positively reviewed. There are Paradigms, PSB and, at least until recently, B&W models that I could not enjoy regardless of source or amplification. On the other hand, it seems that design approach may already be ebbing a bit.

But the newer speakers that I really like, that don't over emphasize the top end, are better than any of the vintage designs that I have heard, to my ears. The good new stuff can be fast, transparent and neutral while remaining musical and nonfatiguing in a way that I don't think the older designs I heard could. Lots of small speakers sounding big, and big speakers sounding integrated from top to bottom.

"If you are the owner of a new stereophonic system, this record will play with even more brilliant true-to-life fidelity. In short, you can purchase this record with no fear of its becoming obsolete in the future."
