The issue of volume with a music signal playback is ALWAYS a voltage or current clipping issue. With most Amplifiers and speaker loads and music signal Current clipping is not as much a concern. Splitting the signal between LP and HP sections BEFORE the amplifiers always improves headroom - as little as a fraction of a dB as much as 6dB.
Clipping an Amplifier during music playback is not as audible as you might think and sometimes comes across as "better" sounding - depending on the amplifier - signal and their characteristics.
