I am often appalled at seeing set ups with speakers sitting on hardwood floors with no carpeting in sight, sometimes with a small rug in front, windows behind with bare walls and no curtains. Those guys must like bright, reflecting sound or they don't know any better.
My speakers sit on on a thick carpet with concrete underneath. At one time I had carpet penetrating spikes coupling the speakers to the concrete. Bad idea, but I figured it out pretty quickly and lost the spikes.
