RE: What is a good speaker upgrade for me?

Although I don't think your amp is ideal for them I'd probably opt for Spendor SP1/2s. They aren't hard to find on the used market and I find them more beguiling than Meadowlark Shearwaters or older Vandersteen 2Ces. While the 1/2 doesn't have the bass extension of the Meadowlarks or Vandersteens they have quite a bit more extension and bass heft than your current speakers. Two other, somewhat less likely, options are the J M Reynaud Evolution 3 (rare on the used market) or the Meadowlark Heron i, a much better speaker than the Shearwaters and not so rare as the Evolution 3 but still not quite common, especially for <$2k. The Green Mountain Continuum 1.5i is another option. They usually go for $1.7k - $2k used but be advised that the woofers and I believe the midrange drivers are now unobtanium. The Continuum 1.5i is MUCH more transparent than Vandersteen 2Ce Sigs or Meadowlark Shearwaters without being at all bright or clinical.
