My current system consists of "nearly full range" floor standers and a sub:
NHT Model 2 floor standers (40Hz - 22kHz) - used, for $160
M&K 12" subwoofer (20Hz-40+Hz) - used, for $100
With a bit of patience and luck, decent speakers can be found for nearly ridiculous prices. :)
My TV sound system consists of a pair of NHT Super Zero mini-monitors ($100 - used, with stands), and a Polk 10" subwoofer ($60 - two months old). Perfectly adequate for TV/movies, as far as I'm concerned. The little NHTs only go down to about 85Hz, so I do have to run the sub up to a higher frequency than I might prefer, but have still managed to blend the two pretty well, so again - adequate sound for TV/movies.
Ultimately, the TV sound system is no match for the music system.
