I went thru several "vintage" speakers and amp combo's in my garage too, including EPI 100's, ADS, NHT etc, I found I needed something with more bass than most of them offered. I guess your needs would depend if you're sitting listening (not usually in the garage!) or working around in there.
I bought all of my stuff from garage sales or the local flea market. As cheap as it was, I cycled a lot of different components thru the system trying to find a decent sound. You need a system aimed more at what you would find in a dance club than a audiophile room in my opinion. (Took me awhile to figure that out)I ended up with some Pioneer HPM-40's, (which were aimed at JBL's of the same era I believe) a Marantz integrated and a 5 disc Sony CD player. It's a cheap (about $50.) system that is enjoyable to listen too while working. Sounds like you're on the right track with the JBL choice. GOOD LUCK!!! Lot's of fun.
