Truths with misinformation

(1) "A corner placement is usually the optimum placement for maximum, undistorted output with the most accuracy." While the corner placement will provide the highest output, it will product the most irregular response. A corner placement excites every room mode, leading to the maximum number of standing waves, which leads to the most humps and troughs in the response. A hump is worse than a trough and room modes cannot be equalized out!

Later on he says "Placing the sub(s) close to a wall will increase bass output but may also make the bass less even."

(2)-Multiple subs can yield smoother in-room response than a single subwoofer. Loading the bass into the room from two or more points can give a better balanced bass throughout the room. However: if the crossover frequency is low, (usually below 80Hz or even lower), the best bass may be with the multiple subs placed next to each other.

Yes the more subs the merrier... But they need to be distributed around the room. Toole found that for a typical rectangular room a pair of subs centered on the short wall have a slightly more even response than centered center front and center back. My own tests have shown a placement at the sides near the first sidewall reflection of the mains is a good place for a pair of subs to sit. I also like placement near the listening seat - or either side - the end table approach.

All this assumes a relatively low 80-90Hz crossover and normal sized - 2000-3000cuft rooms.
