I used 2 of the wooden chairs from the kitchen dinette with Vib-X pads between them and the speakers, and it worked pretty well. Had to return the chairs to the breakfast nook at dinner time.

The milk crates aren't a bad idea as long as the speakers are decoupled from them. This is strictly for placement experimentation. Once I get a good feel for where and how they should be situated in the room I will begin the search for stands. I met a local carpenter who I may have construct some custom, adjustable stands.
