They do have optional bases (various stone/ and I believe aluminum) Right now, for the money, the VR33 competes well with speakers costing 3 times as much. The savings comes from buying direct from Von Schweikert, and not having costly wood/high tech paint enclosures. It sounds like they are using either Scanspeak drivers or SEAS, so it appears that they are not using cheap drivers either. It's an interesting design concept as well. The design allows the speakers to be placed close to the back wall without killing the soundstaging abilities. With a 10" sub firing towards the back wall, the bass response is supposed to be just excellent. They do also offer an upgrade to the VR33 - the VR35, with even better components and the nicer looking base/top piece. If I didn't have a near perfect room for Maggies, I'd give these some serious thought.
