Thanks to all who responded.I suppose I'm leaning towards the Sols now, because they will serve me well further down the line if I find that tubes are the way to go (plus they have a better fit and finish).
When I get enough money, I'll upgrade everything else. Right now, I think my upgrade path is as follows:
speakers--power amp--preamp--cd player--subwoofer
of course, this is over a longish timespan, as I'm still in school...
but that's also part of the fun-- building the system up bit by bit.daverino
