I think that Steens are among the most natural speakers and undisputed best value on the market. I recently compared a pair of 2CE Sigs directly to a set of Avalon Avatar ($6k). The Avalons weren't all that much better, and their bass was grossly - GROSSLY - inferior.Richard Vandersteen is one of the few designers (Brian Cheney of VMPS is another) who still understands and makes FULL RANGE loudpeakers, rather than the bass-free but high priced wimp boxes all of the other snake oil slimeballs sell. It's not a matter of driver or parts costs; Vandersteen uses the same high priced drivers and uses even more of them. The truth is cynical greed.
This is not to say that there aren't other fine speakers available. There certaily are. But the price to performance ratio of say Proac, Avalon, Merlin, Totem, etc., is poor. A ripoff.
