RE: Amplifier for Eminent Technology LFT-8's.........

I have the 8Bs. I did not like the synergy of the Wyred4Sound ST250 Class D amp and the ET's. It was too clinical sounding. Maybe other less analytical Class D amps would work. The ET's are quite revealing for one thing, and that W4S amp is known to be analytical. This is one speaker where I believe that amp synergy is quite important, maybe more so than other speakers. I also found a smaller Bryston to be a little dull sounding with the ETs but this was less of a synergy mismatch than the W4S amp.

There is a review of the standmount ET's on BoundForSound where Marty really liked the sound of the ET's and an LSA Signature integrated amp. Knowing that someone found solved the synergy puzzle with the little ET speakers I took that as a lead. I managed to get a good deal on one of these amps and it does sound superb with the 8Bs. So that is one amp that I know works with the ETs. I believe the review also mentioned another amp that works well. It is online in the review section of the boundforsound website.

Its hard to recommend an amp without knowing your budget.

I would phone Bruce Thigpen and state your budget and ask for amp recommendations. He is so very helpful and of course knowledgeable.

The other really important part of making these speakers sound as good as they can is speaker placement. Its more important than amp synergy. They need lots of space behind them because they are dipole. If you can only get them out a foot or two in to the room, it will sound pretty bad and you should try another speaker instead. I strongly recommend using the Cardas dipole speaker calculator (not the non-dipole calculator). That is if you have a reasonably symmetric and rectangular room. Use the distance from the front wall and the side wall too. The side wall distance is critical for good dynamics, tone, room energy. Do not spread the speakers too far part. Use the Cardas calculated distances for speaker placement (and seating) if you can. The other critical part of the 8B's speaker placement is toe in. At least I found this. The drivers are phase aligned I believe. See a thread in the planar speaker sub board if you can find it. Anyway, if you don't toe them in enough (btw, this is with tweeter in the inside as recommended by Bruce) then tweeter and midrange driver won't be aligned. I found the mid range driver doesn't hit the ears properly or something with minimal toe in and there is a real loss of dynamics and coherency. Toe it in more and the sound is totally different, as is way better. I use about 10 degrees of toe in.
