Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Review: BG Radia Z-7 (vs Sierra-1)

THANK YOU Les! I feel the same thing. Whenever I talked audio w/ friends/family, they just make the 'weird' face, probably thinking about all the crazy price and unrealistic ultimate-gears chasing. And I can't blame them because thats what generate news (and attitudes). Bottomline is there are so many good price/performance gems out there. If they know for <$1000 in a full system, they can 'see' their fav singer in the middle doing the disappearing act with sweetness on top, we'd have alot better reputation. In fact they should have a new "Price/Performance Asylum".

Now that I spent more time with the Z-7, I cannot believe how good it is in (very) near field. I now have it toe-in all the way (like ~45 deg) on-axial, with me in front of computer, each Z-7 4 ft away from me. It does the disappearing act no problem w/ dead on center.

I tried many time with Sierra 1 (with Seas tweets) to do that, only get partial result, as with the wide dispersion, small room; its more for a traditional triangular listening with some space to breath. Z-7 (and I image other planar ribbons) does it perfectly. I find myself lookup sometime to 'see' the singer when I'm like 4 ft from the wall/windows.

I have a tekton OB4.5 high eff coming in from Eric in a week, so I have to get a decent SET amp now without excuse (again, all for less than a grand if you know where to look). And I'll hook up a full tube chain with 2.5wpc(can't afford 300B) to this 89db planar and see what it can do. My gut feeling tells me it'll be surprising.

BTW upstream is Linux FLAC==>MHDT Havana==>Jolida pushpull 100wpc.
