I think that an active monitor is your best bet. This will get the flat response you are looking for. My fave for a sub is the Final Sound S220 being slammed out on ebay. These go deep, tight, and are for music not home theater. They have good quality electronics and can be used to crossover and only feed the high pass to the monitors. For 200 - 250 delivered this is crazy.
I have listened to several Paradigm models and all were good. But I just do not like speakers with several drivers in a vertical alignment playing the same frequencies. The comb filtering from the different length and angle to the drivers is why the imaging is off.
There are lots of good powered monitors in all price ranges.Good for a pair with active crossovers and biamped. In fact go to your local Guitar Center to see what they have. If the industrial looks are not an issue, you will be blown away with the values. 1,000.00 will buy a great pair of monitors and sub.
