Velodyne subwoofer noise

I've had this subwoofer for a number of years now, and loved it from day 1.
Just last week I noticed, when the stereo was off and all was quiet, that when I was just a foot in front of the sub, I heard it making noise, static sort of hiss although a bit coarser than "normal" hiss.

I don't remember if it did this all along, but I kind of doubt it.

Is this normal or should I have it serviced? The darn thing weighs like 200 lbs, so taking it someplace would be non-trivial.
