I have two sets of Speakercraft in-wall speakers and one set of ceiling speakers. I'm in the process of paining them to match the rooms they're going in. Was curious about the white felt-type material behind the grill. I removed them of course before painting but the enclosed instructions say to replace them when done. Do they really need to be on? I'd think they would compromise the sound quality, or are they there to hide the drivers behind the grill, or possibly act as a damper to keep the grill from rattling or resonating. Also painting the grills is quite a pain. I'm putting on several watery coats and trying to keep the holes open, and not letting them get gooped up.
