for the KeilidhI ran across a pair of these Keilidh LS300 for a great price on Craiglist, and couldn't pass up a chance to own a pair of these well regarded classics. The LS300 was one of the later configs, with the ceramic tweeter. They are around 2000 vintage.
First, the cabinets are very solidly made, with massive internal bracing, and with the faux granite bases these have a solidity that is very rare at this price point. The cherry veneer is expertly applied and finished, giving them a nicely tailored look, great for a smallish (32" high) floorstander.
I hooked them up to my little 28WPC tripath amp and was delighted with what I heard. The highs are very extended and clean, and the mids are just right- balanced, clean, and with excellent instrumental placement. There is a uniformity and coherence to the presentationthat is very effective. Overall, the impression is just a tad laid back, but with terrific listenability. The bass is solid into the 40s, and can sound too full in smallish rooms.
I like these well enough to invest a bit more in them and replace the caps and resistors; many online swear that it is a big improvement.
These are now getting long enough in the tooth to have arrived at "vintage" price levels of $2-600. At those prices they blow the doors off anything I've run across. I think the last price these sold for was $1800, and I doubt all in all that there is a much better new speaker for that $ today. If you like natural musical enjoyment more than in-your-face detail, if you run across a pair, give em a listen!
Product Weakness: Only accepts bananas; slightly laid back overall; bass too prominent in small rooms. Not the last word in detail. Sounstage a bit low because of short stature.
