From your reply to my OP, "The consensus is that ferrite magnet woofers can be designed to work as well or better as Alnico ones but that driver makers had to go through a learning curve to get there after they turned away from Alnico."

On the subject of different magnet material compositions, it is my understanding that one of the reasons driver manufacturers went to different magnet materials was due to the prohibitive high cost of AlNiCo not in the interest of research to find a better magnet.
