It should be remembered that Vandersteen has had some interesting ideas and patents on driver design in the past, including a patent, IIRC, on the cross sectional profile of a vented pole piece. The article mentions one aspect of his latest design: a carbon fiber/balsa sandwich material for the cone structure. It is rumored to be the equivalent of the extremely costly diamond tweeter and midrange units made and used by other companies, but with the equivalent stiffness applied even to a woofer.
IIRC, the break up resonances on the diamond drivers are extremely high and I believe Vandersteen's goal was to emulate such performance in all the drivers of his new designs. If the speaker was playing at CES, it would be interesting to hear the preliminary reports of its sound (at least more than the simple blurb in the article).
