Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

It's all relative.

My advice - sincerely - don't do anything too quick. Try to get out and about and listen at a few dealers, to learn what is possible. Go take up space in their showrooms. Be honest and tell them you're looking for used speakers and are on the upgrade path...but a gradual upgrade path.

My own yardstick is supplied by live concerts. And many years of listening to a bunch of different systems and gear. But don't worry too much over this new audio landscape. If you ultimately decide that clarity and transparency are less important to you for the $$ than warmth and authority, that's perfectly OK. That's also a moment of "clarity".

You do not have to spend lots of money, BTW. Just catch up with where audio has gone, what's available, what's possible and what your system goals are. Good sound can be had on the cheap. It's more work, but worth it. Audiogon, the used market, is your friend. High end doesn't always mean high priced. Plenty of people are getting great sound from DVD players as trasnports with good quality outboard DACs, used speakers, and integrated amps.

Alas, we have lost a few of our high end dealers here in Indianapolis. If you travel around, we might be able to hook you up with some listeners or dealers in various areas. In Indy right now there's mainly Audio Solutions in Broad Ripple - I believe they are still the local Maggie dealer, also McIntosh, Martin-Logan - and Tone Studios downtown is a must - dealers for Vandersteens, Arcam, Cary, Dali. These folks usually have some used gear they've taken in on trade.

AMong the bigger guys, Ovation has *some* high end audio left but is mostly HT. They have some old timers in there, Duke and Roger, who are audiophiles and welcome the chance to talk with music fans. They have some good value speaker lines like PSB and used to carry some very decent stuff, though it's hard to listen to in their stores. The young dudes at Ovation are all into HT and multi-channel. Can't blame them - that's where they make their money. There's a Magnolia's in the Castleton Best Buy - I'm not impressed by the electronics but they have some decent speakers including Vienna.

If you ever get out to Kansas City, they have one of the best audio stores in the US run by the nicest people imaginable - Primus Audio. From budget systems to mega-buck systems. Nice, knowledgable people to talk to, and they also used to ship on trial basis. Don't know if they do that any more. But a half a day spent there is a day well spent.

Feel free to email me if you have any opther questions.
