Try a pair of L-710 or L-810 (i.e., reasonably/popularly priced) and report back to the class :-)
I have a pair of L-710s and find them very beguiling with tubes,e.g., EL84PP (in the guise of an EICO HF-81); despite being acoustic suspension, they are remarkably efficient.
Another potential contendah (again, depending on what you like) would be a pair of original series DCM timewindows. Excellent imaging, respectable bass and good efficienct in a tall, skinny package (and made out of cardboard, to boot!).
all the best,
mrh
