What measuring tool?

I'm in a similar situation, wanting to learn more and come up with a workable 3 way.
Reading the AA archives, it looks like the Radio Shack spl meter and maybe a Rives Audio CD should get me started.
From there I would chart the responses and use these to help determine cross over points.
Any thoughts?
