i've never heard a speaker really rock with less than a 12" woofer. you just can't beat a big-ass woofer in a big-ass box ;-)

i don't even know who makes speakers like this anymore.

my picks:

Yamaha NS-1000 (the larger home version - not the monitor series). i have the NS-1000M Monitor - decent bass, but i use a REL Q100 sub. from my understanding, the larger enclosure from the NS-1000 makes for much deeper bass.

von schweikert VR4 - my friend has them - wow - wicked bass slam. although that aluminum tweeter is annoying to me compared to my Yamaha NS-1000M.

if you got big bucks, hands down the scariest, loudest and hardest hitting speaker system i've EVER HEARD were Edgarhorn Titans with the Seismic horn loaded sub. Bruce put on dark side of the moon at his shop and i ran behind the couch for cover ;-)
