In my opinion, that is only going half way. Why not go all the way to a real bi-amped system. There are many benefits to be had by rolling off the bass from the Maggies. I used to have MG-IIIs, and I did the same as you want to do. Instead of using the amplifier output, use line level instead. I just added a simple series cap to give a first order roll-off to the input of the amplifier driving the Maggies, set for a -3db point of 70Hz. This freed the Maggies and the amp driving them from wasting power on the bottom octave. I used a seperate active crossover and amp for the sub, but a plate amp would work just as well, and they will have a built in crossover for the sub. I think this would give better results than using the amplifier output to drive the sub, and running the Maggies full range.
