Vandersteen 2Wq's also use a speaker level input but add a crossover between your preamp and amp to limit bass below 80hz to your main amp and speakers by 6db.
The 2Wqs then boost their input signal by the same 6db to make up the difference.
The supplied crossover is adjustable and your amp input impedance will need to be known. There's a higher fidelity fixed crossover available after a value is chosen and a much higher fidelity adjustable crossover available at substantial cost.
The REL has the advantage of no crossover in the signal path and the 2Wq has the advantage of unloading your main amp and speakers of bass below 80hz by 6db enabling them to perform better above 80hz.
