Do they have to be "bookshelf" size speakers? What about narrow floorstanders that fit in the corners and don't take up a lot of space?

I'd probably go with a pair of BIB's using Fostex FE108 Sigmas...very unobtrusive, they take up next to no floor space at all and love to live in corners anyway. Very efficient and would give good bass extension with that T-amp, too :)
