. . . by rolling in a second woofer at the lower frequencies, to compensate for the baffle step. A simple series inductor on the ".5" driver, whose -3dB point is matched to the +3dB point of the rising on-axis response, fills out the low end quite nicely.

The wider the baffle, of course, the lower in frequency the BDS occurs, necessitating a bigger inductor on the second woofer.
