I think I know your problem:
You need speakers with physically large baffles.
Speakers with small narrow baffles have a frequency response problem unless placed quite close to the front wall of the room, where imaging would not be the best possible from any speakers due to early reflections(good imaging is one reason people buy small speakers in the first place!).
The frequency response problem is called "Baffle Step Diffraction" and I'll provide a link. The resulting frequency response is heard as excessive (roughly +1 to +3dB) upper mid-range and treble energy (a thin bright sound that is common with modern slim baffle speakers, that I believe is just the opposite of what you want to hear)
