You should hunt down Alon 1 MK1s. The early version, before the higher power handling woofers were implemented, will trounce a DQ-12. Similar configuration, just way better. The early Alon 1s used similar woofers to the units that were developed for the prototype DQ-12s. With that woofer the 12s creamed the 20s. Jon demanded the 12s be toned down to keep it from hurting 20 sales, so the better woofers never made it into production. Carl made a few more subtle changes before it was released. Development of the DQ12 led to improvements in the DQ20, the DQ20I. Far better than the original, imo, but could still be tough to match up with electronics. Anyway, if you really like the 12s, you'll love any version of the Alon 1s, I think.

DQ8s were a nice speaker. 30 good tube watts in a small room could make some special sound. Ugly did you say? I had a $12 budget, per unit, for the grill, wood blocks and rear screen. $12! Hey, it was approved over all other submissions, so it couldn't have been that bad, could it? :-) I'm not hurt (sniff).
