Smaller cones in general require less enclosure space to tune low when ported or sealed.

Multiple small drivers equaling the cone area of a larger cone can handle more power, and equal the sensitivity of a single, giving more ultimate output.

Although the speed of sound is the speed of sound, lighter, stiffer small cones are capable of more accurate transient response than a large cone, because the stiffness to weight ratio is better for a smaller diameter.

Ultimately, there is no replacement for displacement, but form factor is probably driving the size reduction more than anything else.
