You hinted at using higher power and I bet these speakers WILL sound better if they had more drive from a robust power amp. 85dB SPL, with 2.83V rms @ 1m is not a very sensitive speaker.
Even my 91dB Tannoys come alive with a good 100wpc+ power amp.
Nice review though. If you ever get a chance, try a hefty amp with those speakers and you might be surprised at how good they really sound.
