The J/L is quite excellent. I heard it before the J/Spe but the latter was considerably better so I could not go back to the J/L. The refinement in the mid and upper treble is remarkable.

I have my J's as close to the corners as possible - but they work nicely free standing as well I'd say a 6 inches to 3 feet would work nicely depending on your room with toe in that the tweeters are firing in front of your head 1-3 feet. All speakers require a bit of adjustment to the room - but they are very room friendly IME.

The AN J and E use the same drivers and same kind of box design. Here is the full manual for the AN E which should help you out.
