Phase plugs are used in the throat of mid / treble horns, driven by compression drivers, and they do a different job to a PPE.

It halves the reflective distances across the cone, and thus smooths the transition/s in the dispersion behaviour of the driver, reducing distortion, too. Less hash!?

Making the beaming audibly more acceptable, but I don't think they reduce its energy by much, at all.

PPE's made of metal can provide some heat sink area for the motor, as well.
