Get a pair of Totem Rainmakers and a subwoofer kit from Parts Express.

Anything else for $1000 from a mid-fi warehouse type store would likely not come close for sound quality, aesthetics and bass power.

Guys with $25K stereos may laugh, but your stereo will have decent sound and value in spades!
