... but what did your wife find unacceptable about the old speakers? Is there a particular style or size that she'd prefer (i.e., monitor on a stand, something for a bookshelf, floor stander, one of the more narrow designs currently popular, etc.) It'll help in making suggestions if you get more specific as to what is allowed.

Also, what are your tastes in music? How do you listen? What about the associated equipment?

Don't overlook used speakers. There are some great buys out there that'd really stretch a $1,000 budget in contrast to what you'd get new for the same sum.
