Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Newbie Modder asks if feasible to upgrade tweeters in Paradigm Reference Studio 20 speakers?

A coupla things here:

> "They sound very good with audiophile vinyl but digital is more dubious."

Your blaming the messenger and in this case it's the tweeter. If they sound good with vinyl and not with digital, you need to either look to your digital source as the culprit or the quality of your AC and/or RF infiltration into your system.

Digital in general is known to dump RF nasties back into the AC line(s) and this contaminates the whole system causing bright/irritating/sizzling highs, vauge midrange clarity and degraded bass performance. An isolation transformer on the incoming power to your digital source will cure this.

> "Would this just involve getting a silk dome speaker of the right size and spec and swapping them out?"

Merely swapping out tweeters hardly ever produces satisfactory results without a major rework of the crossover. The drivers/crossover/cabinet design, including the square tweeter mount, and in this case the grill as well, were all taken into consideration when Paradigm "voiced" their speakers.

May I suggest you turn your attention to your digital source and implement an isolation transformer rather than mucking up your speakers to try and solve a problem that they are not responsible for.
