Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

I thought they would sound better..

68.2.89.151

I just purchase a pair of KEF 104/2 speakers. They are in fine shape, from the surrounds to the terminals. I am playing them with a Onkyo p-304 and m-504 amp/preamp combo. For a source I am using a Yamaha cdx-1030 cd player. I had a pair of Pioneer hpm-100's and JBL L-100's I have been using with my system. I wanted to upgrade - speakerwise and read great things about the KEF's 104/2. The KEF's sounded OK at the guys house....just as good as his B&W's (forgot model, but similar in size to KEF's). The KEF's do lack the base of the hpm-100's but seem better in the mids, vocals and strings. Played some cuts from Dire Straits Brothers in Arms. Pink Floyd, Simon & Garfunkel....
Even tho the bass response for the KEF's was rated at 55hz lowest, I thought they would sound alot better overall than the jbl's or pioneers.

The Onkyo is rated at 170 wpc into 8 ohms....but when I started to crank the volume with the KEF's, the LED's around the meter would get dim on the peaks.... I'm not sure if that is a condition of my line voltage or of the amp. I do know that the house/room outside CB will trip if wifey turns on hair dryer and something else on same circuit.

I realize the amp is drawing more current with the 4 ohm kef's than the 8 ohm hpm-100's. Perhaps the kefs and m-504 are not a good match....
...just trying to improve my system one piece at a time.....
