Old Sonus Faber Stands

If you've been perusing my blog (see link below), you know that, in the mid-90s, when Sonus Faber came out with the original Concertino and Concerto, Sumiko (Sonus Faber's US distributor) offered two stands. The walnut-striped Fixed Stand and gloss black scalloped Franklin & Lowell were both US$495/pair.

You can search long and hard, but you won't find much user information on these stands. Who else but yours truly reports on the real world nitty gritty? On my 10/16/07 post, I brought up the issue of stands for the Concert series. On 10/17, I showed the F&L stand. On 11/16, I detailed the Stand Fixed. On 11/17, I compared the two.

But what you guys really want to know is, "How do the two stands sound?" For the sake of this argument, let's keep everything else in the system constant, and change only the stands.

In small and/or cramped rooms, the extra inch provided by the F&L stand is not trivial. For some audiophiles, that alone is enough to render a buying decision.

But if that inch doesn't matter to you, the Stand Fixed reminds me of when I placed the Totem Model 1 Signature on the 4-pillar Atlantic Reference stand. I had assumed that that stand would be fine. It wasn't until I ordered a custom Billy Bags stand, did I realize that the Atlantic Reference was gently rolling off the treble. Similar results happened, when removing the Stand Fixed, and installing the F&L. So while the Stand Fixed subjectively sounds smoother, it subtly but pervasively rolls off the treble.

This you will find, when you replace the Stand Fixed with the F&L, despite the latter's use of a Sorbothane [which many audiophiles report as having a smooth, rounded, rolled-off sonic character] sheet on its top plate. The F&L allows the Concertino/Concerto to remain open and extended up top. Simply put, these speakers sound more transparent, see-through, and alive, when placed atop the F&L stand.
