concentrate your efforts on the amplification and source components (not to mention, perhaps the most important, the quality of the recordings themselves). a decent $1000 speaker would be just as good as a $3000 one if the balance is spent on good electronics and attention to room treatment, placement, etc.

there are no short cuts to good sound but a good source and electronics driving a reasonably good pair of speakers beats a mediocre source and amplification driving an expensive/demanding/revealing set of speakers. especially given limited physical space.

there are exceptions, of course.
