It depends. There are some really good small manufacturers. And there are some really good large manufacturers. I wouldn't preclude either, a priori.

However, if you are going to go for small manufacturers, it's best to take some extra time to figure out if they really know what they are doing.

You can get a lot more bang for the buck buying gear directly from small manufacturers. And you can have stuff customized. And you can speak directly with the company president, and sometimes he'll even have a soldering iron in his hand when you talk to him. But he's not going to have the same R&D budget as a big company. So his designs will usually be based on the very personal knowledge of one, or a small few, people. And there probably won't be much machine assembly (for better or for worse).

But oooooooohhhh... sometimes you find a small company that makes spectacular stuff year after year. Yum.

Anyhow, there are lots of great speakers in the $2-3K range. Spend some time doing research and listening. It's worth it.
