If they give you a trial period in which they let you return them, what is wrong with factory direct? You may have to pay shipping and restocking fees. I'd say try them and send them back if you don't like them.
Maybe you can even get a local dealer to let you take some B&Ws or whatever home for a trial and you can compare them to the factory models in your own home.
There has been at least one fine speaker sold factory direct. The company was RDL. Room designed loudspeaker. This was a Roy Allison company--he worked with such greats as Henry Kloss and Edgar Villchur in the 60s and developed some dome tweeters. I won't get into the technical details, but his RDLs were and are very fine speakers. I have never even seen one for sale on the internet. They are keepers. His problem was that he came out before the internet was big enough to support direct sales.
