...or maybe not as Todd said. Just like the different brands offered at your local audio salon some direct sale brands are better than others. If you are not a risk taker then probably direct buying is not for you, and there are plenty of good values to be had in stores too.

That said, if you do your research and are willing to take a calculated risk, you can save *a lot* of money buying direct. I have done so for years and been quite happy with the results (although I also buy from stores too). If you can, after narrowing your choices down to a couple contenders I recommend getting an audition at a direct sale speaker owner's house as it can help in your decision making. Also many of the factory direct brands have a full refund policy after an in-home trial period minus the shipping costs (I say steer clear of any brands who dont). Finally you can hear many of the brands at CES if you are willing to make the trip. I personally find it is far from an optimal place to hear speakers, but it at least lets you sample a lot of what is out there.
