Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Measure SPL of bass sine waves at your primary seat, or just listen to them = that's your bass frequency response

Use sine waves spaced no more than 1/6 octave apart (closer spacing would be better).

Your ears will quickly tell you when a bass frequency is much too loud or much too weak from standing wave reflections.

This doesn't work for higher frequencies (shorter wavelengths) where a small movement of your ears can make a big difference.

Big rooms usually have better sounding bass.

"Open rooms" are more likely to sound like big rooms than like small rooms.

Exciting all the room modes in a rectangular room with a corner sub (or two) can sound okay if the resulting bass peaks are well spaced and can be smoothed by your ears' one-third octave smoothing ability (not likely) ... AND your main speakers are near the corners too.

If your subs are in corners located far from the main speakers, the bass note attack from the main speakers will reach your ears before the remainder of the bass notes from the subwoofers -- a few feet difference may not be audible, but no high quality full-range speaker designer would ever place two drivers at such different disrtances from the listeners ears, so why should anyone want to do this with their subwoofers? (But for bass under 40Hz. any sub location is likely to be sonically invisible)

There is no pressurization in home listening rooms that boosts bass output as frequencies decline unless the room is sealed as well as a car would be with all windows closed (not likely).
