I contacted Danny Richie of GR Research to see if he could suggest any mods for my VR-1's. I would suspect that similar mods would result in similar gains with your VR-2's.
Danny was GREAT to deal with, and suggested replacing all the caps with sonicaps, and adding bypass caps. he also suggested adding some Norez damping material, too. He didn't suggest replacing the inductors, as the benefits would likely be small, and without exactly matching the inductance (by unwinding some of the coils), replacing them straight-up could potentially hurt the performance.
All said and done, i did exactly what he suggested, and can't be happier for about $120 and some time with a soldering iron. I think the only better mod/tweak per dollar i've encountered is replacing my outlet with a Furutech.
Sonically, the modded VR-1's are even more transparent, and they really gain a healthy amount of palpability. that juicy midrange that just sounds so involving and musical is now here in spades. Now when I'm in another room, it's spooky how much the radio sounds like actual living breathing people speaking in my living room.
my ears tell me that it was a good choice, despite what some nay-sayers may suggest about the 'cheap' drivers in VS speakers in general. as always, YMMV, but I'm very pleased with the upgrades to the crossovers.
