I think it is more about the final sound of a design, then the price of the drivers used.
My Grandma could make round steak, and all in the neighborhood wanted to eat with us.
Vandersteen used a cheap Vifa Aluminum dome tweeter for years, and Wilson is guilty of sometimes using :cheap: drivers too.
It is interesting that some in the DIY community have tested some Vifa drivers like used in the Von Schweikerts and found them to outperform some more expensive ones.
And, just because they are MADE by Vifa, who is to say they are not modified to Von Schweikerts specs ?
My sons Nissan 240 LOOKS stock, but has a twin turbo motor under the hood.
All that said, I think any speaker can be made to sound different with mods.
Better is up to you.
I owned the VR 2's, and the VR 4 Jr's.
I found both to be musical, and enjoyed both.
BOTH speakers take an almost insane amount of time to break in, and many owners IMHO simply haven't given the speakers enough time, or the good front end needed for good sound.
But, if it were me, I would leave em alone, and spend money on better stuff in front of them.
Unlike some almost ameteurish so called high end speakers, designed by those with zero academic credentials, Albert Von Schweikert knows what he is doing.
He knows how to measure, and because he was a musician for years, also knows how to hear.
He studied at Cal Tech under Richard Heyser, and also learned working for Oskar Heil at ESS.
Designing the VR 2 was far from his first rodeo, and you can be sure they were done right.
IMHO, having owned both, the VR 4JR is a MUCH beter speaker, pure majic when you get it right.
Maybe sell the VR 2's, and move up to the VR 4 JR's ?
I would do that rather then let some tweak get into my speakers, and ruin their resale value ?
